Transformation of sentences is a vital grammar skill that helps students express the same idea in multiple ways without changing its meaning. 📘 Understanding the Four Types of Transformations

1. Affirmative to Negative Sentences

An affirmative sentence states a fact or expresses an opinion positively. A negative sentence, on the other hand, states that something is false or denies a fact .

Rules for Transformation:

The simplest way to transform an affirmative sentence into a negative sentence is by adding ‘not’ after the verb or in between verbs when there are multiple verbs .

Additional Rule: To maintain the original meaning, we can use opposite words with a negative prefix . For example:

  • “This is a common occurrence” → “This is not an uncommon occurrence” .

2. Assertive to Interrogative Sentences

An assertive sentence makes a statement or declaration. An interrogative sentence asks a question .

Rules for Transformation:

To convert an assertive sentence into an interrogative sentence, you need to invert the position of the subject and the auxiliary verb. The rest of the sentence mostly remains unchanged, and you must insert a question mark .

Key Rule: If the assertive sentence is positive, make the question negative. If the assertive sentence is negative, the interrogative sentence should be positive .

3. Question Tags (Tail Questions)

Question tags are short questions added at the end of a sentence. We use them to invite a response or confirmation from the person we are speaking to . Question tags are formed by adding an auxiliary verb and repeating the subject of the main clause as a pronoun .

Rules for Forming Question Tags:

  • For positive sentences, we use the short form (contraction) of the negation.

  • For negative sentences, we use the positive form .

Key Rule: The positive helping verb becomes negative when you add a question tag and vice versa .

4. Assertive to Exclamatory Sentences

Rules for Transformation:

When transforming an assertive sentence into an exclamatory sentence, we often use “How” before adjectives or “What” before nouns .
